Most of what ChatGPT says about your brand comes from somewhere else
84% of AI citations come from earned media, and your own site is 5 to 10% of what a model pulls about you. Here is what the models actually quote, the move that tested flat, and the four that work, in order.
AI assistants quote what other people write about you
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best product in your category, it returns a shortlist, not a page of results. You are on it or you do not exist. And the shortlist is not built from Google’s top ten: two 2026 studies measured the overlap between what AI cites and what ranks, and found under 20% in one and 38%, down from 76%, in the other.
Most of what gets quoted comes from reviews, comparisons, best-of lists and forum threads. Your own domain is 5 to 10% of the sources a model pulls when it answers a question about your brand. If your whole content budget goes to your own blog, you are buying the 5%.

Where AI answers actually come from
people a week use ChatGPT (OpenAI, February 2026)
of AI citations come from earned media (Muck Rack, May 2026)
of the sources a model pulls about a brand are the brand’s own site (Semrush, 2025)
overlap between what AI cites and what ranks on Google (5W Research and Brandlight, May 2026)
The schema move that tested flat
The fix almost everybody sells first is structured data, and there is a statistic that makes it look unanswerable: schema appears on 61% of AI-cited pages against 25% of Google’s top results. That is a correlation. The cited pages are publishers, review sites and comparison sites, and they use schema because they are professional publishers. The markup came along for the ride.
When Ahrefs tested pages that added structured data in 2026, AI citations showed no statistically significant change. The statistic is real. The direction is backwards.
So do the markup. It takes about a week, it is cheap, and it makes your pages legible. It is table stakes, not the lever.
The four moves that work, in this order
Get onto the lists that already exist
Search your category plus the word best and read what comes back. Those writers are who the model quotes, and they have email addresses. Pitch them, get included, and get the piece updated when your product changes.
Show up where people talk
Reddit, forums and review platforms. Models weigh them heavier than anything you publish. Earn it: send product, answer questions under your own name. Faking it gets you caught, and cited as the brand that got caught.
Put the answer first
Every page answers its own question in the first two paragraphs. Plain language, numbers stated, no buildup. The founder story goes underneath.
Say the same thing everywhere
Models assemble a picture of you from scattered sources. Contradict yourself across channels and you read as a brand they cannot describe confidently, so they describe someone else.
Why AI visibility makes your ads cheaper
When your ad reaches someone who already saw your name in an AI answer, a best-of list or a thread, click-through and conversion rate move together, and Meta and Google both price your ads on those two numbers. It runs the other way too: someone sees your ad, asks an assistant whether you are any good, and gets a vague answer or your competitor.
- Your AI presence is the landing page in front of your landing page.
- This is the same funnel as your paid media, from the opposite end.
- AI answers change from one run to the next, so check them regularly, not once.
Three prompts to run on your own category
Open ChatGPT or Gemini and ask three things:
- Ask for the best product in your category.
- Ask for the best one for a specific need a real customer of yours has.
- Ask whether your brand is worth buying.
If you are missing from all three, you are not behind on search optimization. You are absent from where the decision now gets made, and the four moves above are the order to fix it in.
AI SEO FAQ
What sources does ChatGPT cite most?
Mostly earned media. Muck Rack’s May 2026 analysis found 84% of AI citations come from sources other than the brand: reviews, comparisons, best-of lists, news and forums. A brand’s own domain is 5 to 10% of what a model pulls about that brand (Semrush, 2025).
Does schema markup help you get cited by AI?
Not on its own. Schema is common on cited pages, but Ahrefs’ 2026 test of pages that added structured data found no statistically significant change in AI citations. Add it because it is cheap and makes pages legible, then put the real effort into earned mentions.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
Get onto the best-of lists and comparisons it already quotes, earn mentions in forums and reviews, answer each page’s question in its first two paragraphs, and describe your brand the same way everywhere. Then check the answers again, since they change between runs.
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
Mostly in where the work goes. Ranking your own pages still matters, but most of what AI cites never ranked for you, so AI visibility depends far more on what other sites say about you than on your own pages.
